Plot summary
Near the end of World War II, Nazis capture Indiana Jones and the Oxford archaeologist Basil Shaw in the French Alps, where the two were hunting the Spear of Longinus. The astrophysicist Jürgen Voller tells his commanders that the lance is a fake, and that what he has actually found is one half of Archimedes' Dial, the Antikythera mechanism, which can reveal fissures in time. By 1969, Jones is near retirement from his teaching post at Hunter College in New York City, and he lives apart from his wife Marion. His goddaughter Helena Shaw, Basil's daughter, visits him, wanting to research the Dial, the object her late father studied obsessively before giving it to Jones to destroy. Jones never destroyed it, and the two go to the college archives to recover the half he kept.
