Ronald Lacey
Biography
Ronald Lacey, an English actor, worked in film and television for around 30 years. Born and raised in Harrow, Middlesex, he trained as an actor at London's Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after a spell of national service, and he began his career in 1959 in the television play The Secret Agent. His first significant stage role came at the Royal Court Theatre in Chips with Everything in 1962. His beady eyes and overbite pushed him toward bizarre parts, often cowardly or creepy villains, and he played Dylan Thomas on BBC2. On television he was Harris in the sitcom Porridge, and in Blackadder II he was the Bishop of Bath and Wells. Steven Spielberg cast him as Arnold Toht, the Nazi agent in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Villain parts followed in Sahara (1983), Flesh+Blood (1985) and Red Sonja (1985), and he was a Russian scientist in Firefox (1982). He died in 1991.

By the late 1970s, Ronald Lacey was unhappy enough with his acting work that he thought about opening a talent agency. Then Steven Spielberg gave him the part of Arnold Toht, a Nazi agent, in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
