Plot summary
Mowgli now lives in the Man-Village, adopted by its leader, with Shanti and the leader's son Ranjan around him, yet he longs for the jungle. He nearly takes the village children across the river, and the leader confines him to his room as punishment. Out in the wild, Baloo is lonely, and when he heads for the village to fetch Mowgli, Bagheera, Colonel Hathi and his herd move to block him. Mowgli's old enemy Shere Khan has come back to that part of the jungle, meaning to settle his score. Baloo slips into the village at night and brings Mowgli away with him; Shanti and Ranjan set off after them, thinking a rabid animal has taken the boy.

- A legal dispute kept King Louie, the ape king of the original Jungle Book, out of The Jungle Book 2, though he still appears as a shadow puppet early in the film and is mentioned later on.
- At the start of The Jungle Book 2, Shere Khan is deliberately kept in shadow, a choice the makers said was meant to reflect his wounded pride after being defeated.
- The Jungle Book 2 was originally made as a direct-to-video film but went to cinemas instead, making it the fourth Disney animated sequel released theatrically and the last until Ralph Breaks the Internet in 2018.
