Plot summary
Mustafa, a foreign poet and painter, lives under house arrest in Lebanon, which is under Ottoman rule. His housekeeper Kamila, a widow, keeps his household, and the soldier Halim, posted to watch him, is drawn to her. Kamila's young daughter Almitra has not spoken since her father died; she takes things from local merchants and spends her time with seagulls, whose calls she answers in their own manner. A Sergeant arrives with news that Mustafa is a free man and must board a ship for his home country before the day is out. As the Sergeant escorts him through the town, Mustafa talks with Kamila, Almitra, Halim and the townspeople, who treat him as a hero, about freedom, marriage, parenthood, work, food, love, and good and evil, each conversation animated in its own style.
