Plot summary
John Blackthorne, an Englishman serving the Dutch, is the navigator of the Erasmus, one ship in a merchant fleet crossing the Pacific from the Americas to escape the Spanish. The fleet is bound for Japan, and Blackthorne is the first aboard to see what the country might offer. A violent storm in Asian waters capsizes the ships. Japan is a feudal land where the Portuguese hold strong influence, and a contest over who will be Shogun, the leader who governs under the emperor, has reached its final stage. Lord Yoshi Toranaga sees in Blackthorne something he can use, both to survive the struggle ahead and, if each man plays his hand well, to become Shogun.
