Plot summary
At the Yuletide feast, a knight in green armor arrives with a challenge for King Arthur's court: he will let any knight strike off his head with one swing of an ax, provided he may return the blow. No one at the table volunteers, and Arthur takes up the challenge himself, until his young squire Gawain steps forward in his place and is knighted. Gawain beheads the knight, who picks up his head and sets it back on his neck. Because of Gawain's youth, the knight declines to strike him, and gives him one year to solve a riddle that will save his life. Gawain leaves the court with squire Humphrey to seek the answer.
