Jerry Lewis
Biography
Jerry Lewis was an American comedian, actor, singer and filmmaker who became a major star in a comedy duo with Dean Martin. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 16, 1926, to a vaudevillian father and a radio pianist mother, he began performing as a teenager. He and Martin, billed as Martin and Lewis, made sixteen films together, including My Friend Irma (1949) and At War with the Army (1950), and appeared on The Colgate Comedy Hour until their 1956 split. On his own, Lewis produced, directed, co-wrote and starred in films such as The Bellboy (1960), The Ladies Man (1961) and The Nutty Professor (1963), often considered his best. He later appeared in The King of Comedy (1982) and Arizona Dream (1993). He recorded albums, hosted the Academy Awards three times, and received two stars on Hollywood's Walk of Fame and France's Legion of Honor.

A role that slipped away
Billy Wilder wanted Lewis for the lead in Some Like It Hot, an uptight jazz musician who ends up fleeing a mob, but Lewis said no to the part.
Behind the camera
While making The Bellboy in 1960, Lewis came up with a new method: video cameras plus several closed circuit monitors let him watch his own performance right away.
