Plot summary
Harvey Miller was expected to follow his father, a famous golf professional, into the game. He is afraid of crowds, however, and on the advice of his fiancée Lisa he teaches golf instead of playing it. Lisa's brother Joe becomes his first client, and Joe improves quickly enough to enter tournaments with Harvey as his caddie. At one of the events they meet Kathy Taylor, a wealthy socialite involved in organizing the tournament, and she and Joe are drawn to each other at once. Papa Anthony, Joe's father, earns his living by fishing, and Joe has to convince him that sinking a ball in a hole can pay better than trawling the ocean.

- Donna Reed's career began a huge upswing after The Caddy came out. Five days before its release, Columbia Pictures brought out From Here to Eternity, which won Reed the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
- "That's Amore", sung by Dean Martin, was a hit from the film's score and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song, losing to "Secret Love" from Calamity Jane.
- For a promotional radio message, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis could not get through five lines of dialogue; outtakes on The Golden Age of Comedy CD show them trading lines of profanity whenever one of them fluffed a line.
