Plot summary
By 1989 the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union is on. Hoffman and Schmidlap man the American weather station on the Moon, and their long stay in space has left them in poor shape: Schmidlap ties Hoffman up, has knocked out his front teeth, and draws naked women. Harold Quonset, who heads NAWA, wants the pair relieved before the agency is embarrassed, and the Soviets have already put the first unmarried man and woman on the Moon. The astronauts due to fly as the first married couple, Ted and Peggy, break up, so Quonset looks to Peter Mattemore and Eileen Forbes, who have never flown. Peter picks Eileen from photographs of NAWA women, and she agrees to a marriage in name only; the two speak their vows while being hurried up the gantry toward the launch.
