Plot summary
Barbara Tuttle is an heiress to the Tuttle Department Store fortune, and she has not told her fiancé. Norman Phiffier works as a dog walker, and he is a proud man who will not marry until he can buy a home for them. Barbara's mother, Phoebe Tuttle, thinks Norman is beneath her daughter and wants the engagement broken. She arranges for him to be hired at one of her stores, where the manager, Quimby, is directed to hand him a series of impossible and outrageous tasks. She hopes the frustration will make Norman quit and show Barbara that he is worthless. Norman becomes more driven instead, and he befriends John Tuttle at the store without either man suspecting who the other is.
