Plot summary
Dr. Elizabeth Acord is a psychiatrist whose patients depend on her, so she does not think she can leave them for a year in Paris with her boyfriend, the artist Christopher Pride. He learns that three of the women in her care are despondent over relationships that went wrong, and he decides to restore their self-esteem himself, without telling Acord. For each of them he invents a man suited to what she wants: Ringo Raintree, a millionaire cowboy, for Anna Jacque, a French patient; Rutherford, a zoologist, and Rutherford's twin sister Heather, for Mary Lou Mauve, a southern belle; and Warren, a fellow athlete, for Susan Manning.
