Plot summary
Pat Kazarian's racing team starts the season with two drivers, Mike Marsh and Jim Loomis. The red line in the title is the mark at 7000 RPM on a racing car's tachometer, the point past which the engine is not safe. A crash at Daytona takes Jim's life. Holly McGregor, his girlfriend, gets to the track after the race is over and blames herself for not being there. Ned Arp, a young driver, joins the team and takes an interest in Kazarian's sister, Julie. Dan McCall comes from France with his girlfriend, Gabrielle Queneau, and turns his attention toward Holly. Mike dislikes the way McCall behaves with women.

- Quentin Tarantino is a fan of Red Line 7000 and said that if he directed a racing movie he would try to mimic its Sixties AIP flavour and would draw inspiration from Howard Hawks' film.
- Howard Hawks considered Paul Mantee, who had starred in Paramount's Robinson Crusoe on Mars, for the lead in Red Line 7000, but gave the part to another Paramount actor, James Caan.
- The Cobra Daytona Coupe driven in the film was chassis CSX2287, the first of the six coupes built; it raced seven FIA events in 1964 and one in 1965 and set 23 national and international speed records at Bonneville in November 1965.
- George Takei's race mechanic Kato in Red Line 7000 was partly inspired by Jack Kuramoto, a Japanese American service station owner in Los Angeles's Little Tokyo who was a friend of Howard Hawks's and often worked on his personal cars.
- NASCAR driver Larry Frank helped film Red Line 7000 by letting the crew mount cameras on his car, and later drove that camera-car himself in a NASCAR race.
- Howard Hawks said he had intended to tell just one story in Red Line 7000, decided it was a lot of padding, and added two more, stripping the film of non-essentials.
