Biography

Robert Strauss was an American actor who first performed on Broadway in Shakespeare plays such as Twelfth Night and Macbeth in 1930. He found his niche in comedy, becoming best known for the role of Stanislas Kuzawa, which he created in the original 1951 stage production of Stalag 17 and reprised in the 1953 film adaptation, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He played broad comic roles in movies like Here Come the Girls, Li'l Abner, and The Seven Year Itch (1955), and took more serious supporting parts in The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Attack (1956). After additional stage credits including Detective Story, he moved into character parts in such films as The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954) and Wake Me When It's Over. On television he had a recurring part on Bewitched as Charlie Leach and appeared on many other series, and he was also active in radio dramas.
