Plot summary
Pete Nelson and his old buddy Jerome F. Hotchkiss, called Jerry, join a circus with no money and take whatever work the show offers. Sam Morley manages the outfit and Jill Brent owns it and serves as ringmaster, and the two of them are struggling to keep it running. Jerry wants to be a clown, but his first assignment puts him under lion tamer Colonel Fritz Schlitz, who sends him into the lions' cage with a whip and a chair and tells him to show no fear. Pete takes a liking to Jill. Jill dislikes the trapeze performer Saadia, yet Morley insists the circus would go bankrupt without her.

- Paramount recut 3 Ring Circus in 1974, cutting the early military and circus scenes that paired Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis together as well as Martin's later musical numbers. Retitled Jerrico the Wonder Clown, the shortened film reduced Martin's screen time and gave more emphasis to Lewis' character, and it played at children's matinees.
- 3 Ring Circus was only the second film ever shot in VistaVision, and a clip from it was included in a promotional short titled Paramount Presents VistaVision.
