Plot summary
In 1930, Bill Miller is certain he can succeed as a solo performer, so he and his stage partner Ben Bailey part ways. Bill's act on his own fails, and his manager Leo Lyman proposes that he share the stage with a stooge, a man who absorbs the jokes. Ted Rogers takes the role, an accident-prone foil on the receiving end of Bill's gags while Bill gets the laughs. The act becomes a hit. Ted is billed nowhere and does not realize the act's success rests on him; he stays loyal and defends Bill when people around them say Bill is using him.
