Hans Conried
Biography
Hans Conried was an American actor and comedian who began with classical stage roles before moving into radio in 1937. He grew up in Baltimore and New York City and studied acting at Columbia University, and MGM took him on as a character player in 1938. Early screen parts were small, usually comic, sometimes shady, and his Germanic surname led to wartime enemy-agent roles; he became known for pompous, scholarly types and comic villains. He voiced Captain Hook and George Darling in Peter Pan (1953) and played the dictatorial piano teacher in The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. (1953). Other notable work included Professor Kropotkin on radio and in the film My Friend Irma (1949), a gambler on a riverboat in Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier (1955), the Grinch in Halloween is Grinch Night (1977), and Uncle Tonoose on Make Room for Daddy. He also appeared on Broadway in Can-Can, 70, Girls, 70 and Irene.

Big break
Conried was cast as the dictatorial piano teacher Dr. Terwilliker in Dr. Seuss's The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T, a role that might have changed his career, but the film was a costly failure.
A role that slipped away
In the 1977 Halloween TV special Halloween is Grinch Night, Conried provided the voices of the Narrator and the Grinch, a part first played in 1966 by Boris Karloff in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Early training
Conried played major classical roles onstage after studying acting at Columbia University. In 1937 that work brought him to radio, where he had a supporting part in a Los Angeles broadcast of The Taming of the Shrew.
First role
Conried first appeared on Broadway in the Cole Porter musical Can-Can, where his role was a struggling artist and he sang two musical numbers.
Behind the camera
Conried belonged to the regular cast of Orson Welles' Ceiling Unlimited, and he wrote its December 14, 1942, episode, "War Workers".
