Plot summary
Corporal Chick Allen, a paratrooper, is putting together a show with other soldiers at Fort Benning. The general in charge is unhappy with the quality of past performances and warns that he will do away with them unless they get better. Chick brings in Hap Smith, his former partner, to help. Hap has kept their nightclub act going with a new partner, Betsy Carter, and he performs a comic soldier routine on stage. To join the camp performance at the base, Hap disguises himself as a soldier, and the one-time appearance with the general watching sets the deception in motion.

- Robert Lees and Fred Rinaldo wrote the original story for Jumping Jacks, called Ready, Willing and Four F, during World War II, and Paramount Pictures bought it. Bob Hope and then Danny Kaye were offered it but refused, since each had already made army comedies.
- Paramount made arrangements to bring the Mexican comedian Cantinflas up from Mexico for the film, but the end of the war made army comedies obsolete.
