Plot summary
Eugene Fullstack narrates wild adventures in his sleep, and his roommate Rick Todd draws them as the Vincent the Vulture strips that win him work at Murdock Publishing. In their building lives Abigail Parker, who draws the Bat Lady comic Eugene adores, and her roommate Bessie Sparrowbrush, the model for the heroine. Bessie takes a liking to Eugene, who does not know that she is the Bat Lady. Abigail, tired of the lurid stories her publisher demands, quits and campaigns against comic books. One of Eugene's dreams also yields a real rocket formula, and enemy agents want the rest of it.

- Production Code censors forced Frank Tashlin to drop a phallic joke: in his original script Jerry Lewis's character was named "Fullstick". They also asked Paramount to cut a scene of Dorothy Malone wearing only a strategically placed towel, but the studio refused.
- The part of Abby was first offered to Lizabeth Scott, who had played opposite Martin and Lewis in Scared Stiff; when she turned it down, Dean Martin asked for Dorothy Malone, his other Scared Stiff love interest.
- Artists and Models was the first time Jerry Lewis worked with former Looney Tunes director Frank Tashlin, whom he admired; they reunited on Martin and Lewis's last film, Hollywood or Bust, and Tashlin then directed Lewis in six solo films.
- A sixth song, "The Bat Lady", sung by Shirley MacLaine during the party, was cut from the finished film's final edit.
