Plot summary
Herbert H. Heebert has just graduated from Milltown Junior College and intends to propose to his sweetheart Faith, but he finds her with another man. He announces to his parents that he is swearing off women and travels to California, where he looks for work as a houseboy. A retired opera singer hires him at her large boarding house, and the housekeeper, Katie, is moved to tears by his account of the breakup. The next morning Herbert learns that 31 career women live in the house. When he tries to quit, the owner persuades him to stay and tells the boarders to make him feel needed.

- Mel Brooks worked on the screenplay of The Ladies Man but fought with Jerry Lewis and left the production. Brooks said the final draft kept only two of his scenes, and asked the Writers Guild of America to keep his name off the credits.
- The boarding-house set built for The Ladies Man was 177 ft deep, 154 ft wide and 36 ft high, with a courtyard that let cranes shoot across three and a half floors. The set alone cost $500,000.
- Two weeks into filming The Ladies Man, Jerry Lewis fired cinematographer Haskell Boggs, who had shot most of his films, over a disagreement. Lewis replaced him with W. Wallace Kelley.
