Plot summary
After the war, a destroyer escort named the USS Kornblatt disappeared on its voyage home, and the Navy never recorded its return. Its last commander, Lieutenant John Paul Steckler VII, comes from a long line of Navy officers. With a four billion dollar appropriation at stake, Congressman Mandeville will not approve the funds until the ship is found, and Vice Admiral Bludde has no choice but to comply. Navy personnel pull Steckler from his honeymoon with his new wife, Prudence, and bring him to the Pentagon, where he faces charges of treason and of misusing government property. He satisfies the admirals of his innocence but is ordered to locate the Kornblatt within ten days. Naval Intelligence ensign Benson is assigned to work with him.

- The film was based on the Alcoa Theatre episode "Souvenir", written by Ellis Arnold Kadison from a real mishap: Edward Anhalt, then with the Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit, signed for a captured German Messerschmitt meant as a training-film prop. When it disappeared, the U.S. Government billed him $175,000 until it was found as a mockup on the MGM backlot.
