Dean Martin
Biography
Dean Martin was an American entertainer whose career took in singing, comedy, acting and television hosting. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, he first sang with local bands before teaming with Jerry Lewis in 1946. As Martin and Lewis, the two played nightclubs and then radio, television and movies, including My Friend Irma (1949) and 3 Ring Circus (1954). After the partnership ended in 1956, Martin went solo and sought dramatic roles, earning a comeback with The Young Lions (1958). He starred with Frank Sinatra in Some Came Running (1958), played Dude in Rio Bravo (1959), and joined Rat Pack friends for Ocean's Eleven (1960) and Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964). He hosted The Dean Martin Show from 1965 to 1974 and won a Golden Globe in 1966. Later he appeared in The Cannonball Run (1981). He died in 1995.

About the name
Martin sang with local bands and used the name "Dino Martini," taken from the Metropolitan Opera tenor Nino Martini. By late 1940 he was singing for Sammy Watkins, a Cleveland bandleader who told him to change his name to Dean Martin.
Big break
When NBC pressed Martin to host a weekly variety series, he set conditions he expected the network to refuse, including showing up only on Sundays and not memorizing scripts, and NBC agreed to all of them.
A first
In 1964, Martin's signature tune "Everybody Loves Somebody" replaced the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" at number one in the United States.

Martin was unable to read music, just like Sinatra, but he still managed to record more than 550 songs and 35 studio albums over his career.
