Plot summary
Dino Capisco, a mobster known as Dapper Dino, is about to be paroled after thirteen years in prison. His daughter Cookie Voltecki, born outside his marriage, is arrested with her friend Pia after they jump the turnstiles at a public transit station and resist arrest. The lawyer Henry Solomon gets her released and drives her to meet her father. Dino is disgusted by her gum-chewing and wisecracks. To straighten her out, he sends her to work with his partner Carmine on 7th Avenue. His wife Bunny drives him home from prison.

- Director Susan Seidelman, who had earlier cast Madonna as a casual thief in Desperately Seeking Susan, said that depicting the mob's male milieu in Cookie was one of her trickier tasks, since most of her earlier films had mostly female characters and the mob scenes here were played by middle-aged men.
