Plot summary
Jane Stacy is ambitious and hopes to marry a wealthy man, and she takes a secretarial job with the millionaire Richard Rhinelander. Her roommate Irma Peterson is a dimwitted blonde who means well. Irma is in love with Al, who is always looking for a fast way to get rich. At an orange-juice stand Al hears Steve Laird singing, talks him out of his job and into a career, and brings Steve and his partner Seymour to live in the women's apartment. Jane is angry about the arrangement, and Irma persuades her to let the men stay.

- Jerry Lewis was originally cast as Al in My Friend Irma, but after the first day of screen tests it was clear he was wrong for the part. Fearing he and Dean Martin would be cut from the film, Lewis invented the comic sidekick Seymour, which was written into the script.
- Felix Bressart was originally cast as Professor Kropotkin in My Friend Irma, but he died suddenly during filming, and his completed scenes were reshot with Hans Conried.
- My Friend Irma was followed the next year by My Friend Irma Goes West, the only sequel that Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis ever made.
