Plot summary
Al Crowthers and Melvin Jones meet in the line to sign up for the Navy and become friends. Al has been turned down eleven times because of a bad knee, but keeps applying in the hope of impressing women. Melvin cannot bear the cosmetics women wear; a doctor told him to take an ocean voyage, and enlisting was the cheapest way to do it. The Navy has lowered its standards, though Al does not know this, and both are accepted. They are assigned to Lardoski, a bully from the line. In San Diego, Melvin falls for Hilda Jones.
