Plot summary
At an army base in Kentucky late in 1944, Vic Puccinelli is a first sergeant and Alvin Korwin a private first class, so the sergeant outranks his former partner from a nightclub song-and-dance act. Puccinelli finds his duties dull and asks to be sent overseas on active duty. The transfer is refused, and he is to be promoted to warrant officer instead. Korwin, who has a wife and a new baby, hopes for a pass that would let him visit them. Both men are also expected to rehearse for a talent show on the base and to keep out of trouble with McVey, Alvin's platoon sergeant.
