Plot summary
In Midvale, Indiana, Clayton Poole repairs televisions, and Carla Naples, his former sweetheart there, has become a famous movie star. Carla has a reputation for avoiding affairs and Hollywood carousing. During a fling she marries Carlos, a Mexican bullfighter, in secret; the two agree the match was a mistake and plan an annulment. Carla tears up the license, not knowing she is pregnant, so no record remains to legitimize a child. Her agent, Harold Hermann, wants to avoid a scandal: she will go into seclusion to prepare for a religious epic, The White Virgin of the Nile, give birth in the country, and send the baby back to Midvale. Carla rules out her sister, who is too young, and her father, who has not forgiven her for choosing a movie career, so she turns to Clayton.
