Plot summary
Basic training was supposed to take Private Meredith Bixby six weeks. Seventeen months have gone by and he still cannot fall in line with Army procedure. After he loses a tank, Major Shelton, a psychologist serving with the WAC, is given the task of turning him into a good soldier, and she assigns two other soldiers, Corporal Larry Dolan and Private Stan Wenaslawsky, to train him. Dolan and Stan both hold grudges against Bixby, and the guidance they give brings further mishaps. His photographic memory is the one thing he does well.
