Biography

Born in Saint Petersburg and raised in Britain, George Sanders was an actor and singer whose screen and stage career ran for more than four decades. Early British stage work led to a Broadway appearance in Noël Coward's Conversation Piece in 1934, and Hollywood cast him as Lord Everett Stacy in Lloyd's of London (1936). His sleek manner and upper-class English accent made him a natural choice for sophisticated villains such as Jack Favell in Rebecca (1940), though he had a rare heroic part in Foreign Correspondent (1940). He headlined five Saint films as Simon Templar and the first four Falcon pictures, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as the theater critic Addison DeWitt in All About Eve (1950). Later credits include Ivanhoe (1952), Journey to Italy (1954), Village of the Damned (1960), A Shot in the Dark (1964) and the voice of Shere Khan in The Jungle Book (1967).

  1. A change of course

    Sanders got into acting on the suggestion of Greer Garson, then a company secretary at an advertising agency where he worked after the Depression brought him back to Britain from managing a tobacco plantation in South America.

  2. First role

    Sanders learned to sing and landed a stage role in Ballyhoo, a show with only a short run that nonetheless helped establish him as an actor.

  3. Big break

    Fox cast Sanders as the villain Lord Everett Stacy in Lloyd's of London after looking for an actor for the part, and the film's success led the studio to sign him to a seven-year contract in November 1936.

  4. A role that slipped away

    In July 1942, Fox suspended Sanders after he refused the lead in The Undying Monster. His reason was that he wanted to appear in pictures that seemed at least slightly worthwhile.

  5. Own stunts

    Sanders was an accomplished pianist who kept up his technique for years, and while filming The Last Voyage in 1959 Life observed him playing Chopin etudes on the set during breaks.
