Plot summary
In a Norfolk fishing village in 1770, Jonathan Blake is the nephew of Widow Blake, who keeps an alehouse there. He hears two sailors discuss something suspicious and asks his best friend, Horatio Nelson, to come aboard their ship with him. The boys learn of a plan to cheat insurers. Jonathan decides the insurers must be warned and travels on foot to London, to Lloyd's Coffee House. Angerstein, who heads one of the syndicates there, hears him out and is saved from a great loss. Instead of a reward, Jonathan asks for work as a waiter at Lloyd's.
