Biography

Laird Cregar was an American stage and film actor who became a star in the early 1940s, often cast as villains and disturbed men. He was born in Philadelphia and trained at the Pasadena Playhouse. A 1940 production of Oscar Wilde in Los Angeles drew Hollywood's attention, and he signed with 20th Century Fox. His film debut came in 1940 with small uncredited parts. He played a killer likened to Jack the Ripper in The Lodger (1944), and appeared in I Wake Up Screaming (1941) and This Gun for Hire (1942). Other credits included Heaven Can Wait (1943), Blood and Sand (1941), and The Black Swan (1942). Hangover Square (1945) was released after his death in 1944. In 1960, the Walk of Fame in Hollywood added a star for him posthumously.

Laird Cregar persuaded the Philadelphia Rotary Club to lend him $400 so he could study acting at the Pasadena Playhouse, where he stayed about two years without being noticed.
A role that slipped away
Cregar was tested by 20th Century Fox, which thought about using him in place of Tyrone Power in The Great Commandment, a 1939 film.
