Tyrone Power
Biography
Tyrone Power was an American actor who appeared in dozens of films from the 1930s to the 1950s, often as a swashbuckling hero or a romantic lead. Born in Cincinnati, he came from a theatrical family, joined his father to learn acting, and gained stage experience in New York before trying Hollywood. In 1936 he took the lead in Lloyd's of London (1936) and became a star. He was known for Jesse James (1939), Marie Antoinette (1938), Blood and Sand (1941), The Mark of Zorro (1940), and The Black Swan (1942). Military service interrupted his career. After returning, he starred in The Razor's Edge (1946) and Nightmare Alley (1947), which he called his favorite. In the 1950s he cut back on films to work in theater, earning praise in John Brown's Body and Mister Roberts, and he starred in Witness for the Prosecution (1957). He died in 1958 and received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960.

Big break
Director Henry King liked Tyrone Power's looks and poise and pushed for him to test for the lead in Lloyd's of London, a part Don Ameche was expected to get. Darryl F. Zanuck cast Power after King and editor Barbara McLean argued he had more screen presence.
Beyond film
In 1950, Power went to England to play the title part in Mister Roberts at the London Coliseum, and the stage production brought in sellout crowds for twenty-three weeks.
