Plot summary
An aircraft lands near Rhino Rock in Kenya, and Zia, who owns a caravan, disembarks. At the British outpost of Manieka in British East Africa, District Commissioner Bill Crawford asks the governor in Nairobi for a month's leave to study the Senshi, a local tribe, but Lieutenant Roddy Turner writes to cancel the furlough because the Senshi are becoming hostile. Two aircraft bring Major Coombes, the governor's agent, who announces that he is taking charge of the outpost and warns Crawford that rifles are being smuggled to the Senshi. Jan Kuypens, a Dutch engineer making a mineral survey for the Italian government, agrees to file his report with the British instead. The trader Abdi Hammud sets an ambush for British troops, which Crawford and his men stop, and Zia arrives at the outpost.

- Sundown is set in Kenya and the eastern deserts of Africa, but it was shot at Bronson Caverns in the Hollywood Hills, in California's Mojave Desert and, at director Henry Hathaway's suggestion, on the high desert plains around Shiprock, New Mexico, the site of ancient Pueblo settlements.
- Gene Tierney, then 21 years old, was on loan from 20th-Century Fox to star in Sundown only on the condition that she be given sole top billing in all of the film's advertising.
