Gilbert Emery
Biography
Gilbert Emery, born Gilbert Emery Bensley Pottle, was an American actor and playwright whose screen work ran from 1921 until his death in 1945 and numbered more than 80 films. He was born in Naples, New York, and graduated from Amherst College in 1899, then taught English and public speaking at Beloit Academy and later at Columbia University while writing books, poems and short stories. Early journalism jobs included reporting in New York City for the Morning Sun, the Evening Post and Criterion Magazine, and much of his fiction and drama appeared under the pen name Gilbert Emery. His first play, The Hero, was produced on Broadway in 1921, and six more followed through 1933, among them Tarnish, Love in a Mist, which he also directed, and Housewarming. He also acted in other Broadway productions, including Episode, one of his own plays.
