Charles Coleman
Biography
Charles Coleman was an Australian-American character actor who worked in silent and sound films, most often cast as butlers and other household servants. Born in Sydney, New South Wales, he began in pictures with the 1915 silent film The Mummy and the Humming Bird and went on to more than 200 screen performances, over half of them as butlers, doormen, valets or waiters. His credits included the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film The Gay Divorcee (1934), the Reginald Owen version of A Christmas Carol (1938), and the Bing Crosby comedy A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1949). His last screen work included The Blazing Sun in 1950, while Double Dynamite, filmed in 1948, was released only after his death in 1951. On stage he was a leading man for Pauline Frederick on tours of Australia and the United States, and he appeared on Broadway in Porgy and Bess and Face the Music.
