Plot summary
Albert Lory is an unmarried schoolmaster who lives with his mother and teaches in a European town held by the German army. He is secretly in love with Louise Martin, a fellow teacher and his neighbor, who is engaged to George Lambert, the head of the railway yard and a man convinced that cooperating with the occupiers is the only sensible path. Louise's brother Paul also works at the yard and takes part in resistance activity. During an Allied air raid Albert panics, and the town writes him off as ineffectual. After an attack on German soldiers, Major Erich von Keller rounds up ten local hostages, Albert among them, and warns that they will be shot within a week unless the person responsible is handed over.
