Plot summary
In Victorian London, Lord Arthur Windermere passes for the perfect husband, and his young wife Margaret, who tends to judge others harshly, believes it. Windermere begins paying calls on Mrs. Erlynne, a middle-aged newcomer set on entering high society, and he supports her in the elegant manner she is accustomed to. The two become a favorite subject for local gossips, and the stories reach Margaret. When she learns that her husband has settled large sums of money on Mrs. Erlynne, she concludes that the two are having an affair. Lord Robert Darlington has made no secret of his romantic interest in Margaret.
