Plot summary
In Victorian London, the Bonting family rents rooms in their house, and the household fears the new lodger, Mr. Slade, may be Jack the Ripper. Robert Bonting, who heads the family, is recovering after business reverses brought on a nervous breakdown, so those at home are slow to notice Slade's peculiar habits: he sets every picture of a woman to face the wall and burns odds and ends at night. Women are being killed in Whitechapel, and Scotland Yard, with Inspector John Warwick, is investigating. Kitty Langley, a singer who lodges in the house, has caught Slade's eye, and she has developed an attraction to him.
