Biography

Richard Greene was an English actor who began his stage career at the Old Vic as a spear carrier in Julius Caesar. After appearing with the Jevan Brandon Repertory Company and earning acclaim in Terence Rattigan's French Without Tears, he signed with Fox in 1938. At Fox, his first assignment was Four Men and a Prayer (1938), directed by John Ford. He was the romantic male lead in The Little Princess (1939) and Sir Henry Baskerville, top billed, in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939). Later films included Forever Amber (1947), The Fan (1949), and The Black Castle (1952). He played Robin Hood in the British series The Adventures of Robin Hood, which ran for 143 episodes from 1955 to 1959, and took the role again in Sword of Sherwood Forest (1960). He later played Denis Nayland Smith in The Castle of Fu Manchu (1969) and The Blood of Fu Manchu (1968).

Big break
Greene's performance in Terence Rattigan's French Without Tears drew film offers from MGM, Alexander Korda and Darryl F. Zanuck, and he signed with Fox in January 1938.
A change of course
Greene got out of his Fox contract and went to England, where he joined the 27th Lancers and stood out. Three months later he attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and was commissioned. In May 1944 he became a captain in the 27th Lancers.
Beyond film
Greene later went on tour in a production of Shaw's Arms and the Man, and the show entertained the troops.
