Plot summary
In 1900, Lucy Muir has been a widow for a year when she leaves her late husband's family in London. With her daughter Anna and the housekeeper Martha Huggins, she takes Gull Cottage at Whitecliff-by-the-Sea, though the estate agent, Mr. Coombe, is reluctant to show it. The house holds a portrait of its former owner, the sea captain Daniel Gregg, and a ghostly laugh. That night Lucy insists the spirit reveal himself, and Captain Gregg appears. He explains that he died by accident four years earlier, that he had meant the cottage for retired seamen, and he agrees to let her stay if he appears to no one but her. When her small income fails, he suggests she write his seafaring memoirs.
