Plot summary
A serial killer the press calls the Lipstick Killer is attacking women in New York. At Kyne Enterprises, the aging Amos Kyne dies, leaving the news empire to his son Walter, a man his father had shut out of the business. Unwilling to do the work himself, Walter invents the post of executive director and promises it to whichever of his three division chiefs first lands the story: Mark Loving of the wire service, Jon Day Griffith of the newspapers, or television's "Honest" Harry Kritzer. Griffith asks anchorman Edward Mobley for help, and Loving has the writer Mildred Donner draw information out of Mobley instead.

- The Fritz Lang newspaper drama was based on Charles Einstein's novel The Bloody Spur, which was inspired by the case of Chicago serial killer William Heirens, known as the "Lipstick Killer".
- The film's New York City setting was faked in Los Angeles: the production used the Pacific Electric Belmont trolley tunnel under downtown LA and interurban cars with steps and trolley poles to stand in for New York City Subway cars.
- Several props recycled from Citizen Kane, which RKO had made 15 years earlier, carried a large K in a circle and may have prompted the media family in the film being named Kyne.
