Biography

Robert Coote was an English actor of stage and screen who became known for playing aristocrats and British military men in Hollywood movies. Born in London to the vaudevillian and playwright Bert Coote, he left school at 16 for a touring repertory company and made his West End debut in 1931. After minor British films, he moved to Hollywood in the late 1930s and appeared in Gunga Din (1939) as Sgt. Bertie Higginbotham. His film work resumed after wartime service, with roles in A Matter of Life and Death (1946), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Forever Amber (1947), The Three Musketeers (1948), and Othello (1951). On Broadway he originated Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady and King Pellinore in Camelot, earning a 1957 Tony nomination for the former. He later appeared on television in The Rogues, which brought an Emmy nomination, and ended his feature career in Theatre of Blood (1973).

Early training
Coote attended Hurstpierpoint College in Sussex, though he departed at 16 for a touring repertory company that performed in Britain, South Africa, and Australia. His West End debut came in 1931.
A change of course
Coote's acting career was put on hold when he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, where he held the rank of squadron leader. While in the service, he put together entertainment shows at CFB Rockcliffe.
A first
In 1946, Coote took the part of Bob Trubshawe in A Matter of Life and Death, a Powell and Pressburger film. That movie was picked for the first-ever Royal Film Performance, held on 1 November 1946.
