Plot summary
Simon Templar, the Saint, hires Dugan, a reformed pickpocket and ex-convict. Richard Blake of British Intelligence asks Templar to look into Bruno Lang, a suspected spy, and after meeting Penny Parker, a young woman captivated by his exploits, Templar follows Lang to his home. Templar takes evidence from Lang's safe, and Penny helps him get away. On the road back to London they come across Count Duni, a French diplomat whom Lang's men had held, and Templar hides him at an inn. The count had come to oversee the printing of new currency, and he had been made to approve a secret extra printing worth over a million pounds, which Lang and his partners intend to share. Inspector Teal of Scotland Yard, a friendly rival, takes an interest in what Templar has been doing.
