Plot summary
Gay Laurence, known as the Falcon, has set aside detective work and his way with women to keep the peace with his fiancée, Elinor Benford, and he and his sidekick Jonathan "Goldie" Locke are working as stockbrokers. Elinor wants him to go to a party at the home of Maxine Wood, a socialite whose parties have been troubled by a string of jewel thefts, but he refuses until Helen Reed, Maxine's assistant, asks him to help. Maxine is especially worried about a diamond worn by her guest Vera Gardner. At the party, Elinor dances with Manuel Retana out of annoyance, and Vera Gardner presses the stone into Gay's hand before leaving the room.
