Angela Lansbury
Biography
Angela Lansbury was a performer whose career spanned eight decades in film, theater, and television. Born in London in 1925, she came to the United States in 1940 and studied acting in New York before signing with MGM. Early credits included Gaslight (1944) and National Velvet (1944), and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) earned her a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) brought widespread acclaim and another Oscar nomination. On Broadway, she won Tony Awards for Mame, Dear World, Gypsy, and Sweeney Todd, and starred in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). From 1984 to 1996 she played Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, a role that made her famous on television worldwide. She later voiced roles in Anastasia (1997) and Beauty and the Beast (1991), and appeared in Nanny McPhee (2005) and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). She received six Tony Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and an Academy Honorary Award.

Early training
Lansbury started acting classes at the Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art in Kensington, west London, in 1940. Her first time onstage came there, playing a lady-in-waiting in the school's staging of Maxwell Anderson's Mary of Scotland.
