Miles Mander
Biography
Miles Mander was an English character actor, screenwriter, director and producer who worked in British cinema from the 1920s to the mid-1930s and later in Hollywood. Born in Wolverhampton in 1888, he began in film around 1920 as an extra, then made his credited debut in Testimony and played roles in The Place of Honour and A Scandal in Bohemia. He appeared in The Pleasure Garden (1925), Alfred Hitchcock's first feature as director, and became known for dissipated characters such as drunkards and drug addicts. He started writing and directing in the mid-1920s; The First Born, drawn from his play and novel, was his first major film as director. After directing The Flying Doctor in Australia in 1936, he settled in Hollywood and appeared in more than 60 features, including Lloyd's of London (1936), Tower of London (1939) and Wuthering Heights (1939), often as unprincipled English upper-class villains.
