Skelton Knaggs

Biography

Skelton Knaggs was an English stage and film actor who played sinister characters, especially in horror movies. Born in Sheffield's Hillsborough district, he moved to Syracuse, New York, and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, becoming a Shakespearean actor. He acted in George Bernard Shaw's stage version of Shakespeare's Cymbeline and made his film debut in Everything Is Thunder. After an uncredited part in Michael Powell's The Spy in Black, he settled in Los Angeles and worked as a character actor. Small, with a pock-marked face and a Midlands accent, he was cast in villainous roles. These ranged from uncredited bits to notable parts in the Sherlock Holmes film Terror by Night (1946), the monster crossover House of Dracula (1945), and three films produced by Val Lewton, among them The Ghost Ship (1943), where his voice-over spoke the thoughts of a mute sailor. His last film was Fritz Lang's Moonfleet (1955), and he died in 1955.
