Biography

Cedric Hardwicke built a long career as an English stage and film actor after training at RADA. Born in Lye, Worcestershire, he made his first stage appearance in London in 1912 and later joined the Birmingham Repertory Company. He became known for classical roles and for performing in plays by George Bernard Shaw, among them Caesar and Cleopatra, Pygmalion, The Apple Cart, Candida, Too True to Be Good, and Don Juan in Hell. In 1934 he was knighted at 41, then the youngest actor to receive that honor. His films included Les Misérables (1935), Becky Sharp (1935), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Stanley and Livingstone (1939), The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), Rope (1948), The Winslow Boy (1948), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1949), Richard III (1955), and The Ten Commandments (1956). He also earned a Tony Award nomination for A Majority of One and left two volumes of memoirs.

Hardwicke became the youngest actor to be knighted at age 41 in the 1934 New Year's Honours, a record later taken by Laurence Olivier in 1947.
First role
Hardwicke made his stage debut at London's Lyceum Theatre in 1912, taking over the part of Brother John during the run of The Monk and the Woman.
Early training
Hardwicke meant to become a doctor, but he did not pass the examinations he needed. He then went into the theater and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Beyond film
Hardwicke took the role of Sherlock Holmes for a BBC Radio dramatization of The Speckled Band in 1945, with Finlay Currie playing Dr. Watson opposite him.
Beyond film
Hardwicke played King Arthur in the 1949 comedy musical A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. He sang Busy Doing Nothing alongside Bing Crosby and William Bendix.
