Plot summary
In 1760s southwestern Pennsylvania, resentment of British rule is growing, and colonists are dying at the hands of Native Americans armed with rifles that white traders sell them. James Smith and his followers demand that the British make the weapons trade illegal. Trader Callender and other merchants, whose profits depend on it, keep smuggling rifles and rum to the tribes, hidden inside military supply trains. When the authorities do nothing, Smith gathers his men to intercept the wagons. His spirited girlfriend, Janie MacDougall, joins in, and the group disguises itself as Indians. Callender complains to the army that Smith means to rob the train, without mentioning the guns and liquor aboard, and Captain Swanson is ordered to protect it at all costs. Swanson sees Smith's men as rebels against his authority.
