Plot summary
Philip Monrell runs into Ward Andrews, the roommate he knew at college, in London and takes him back to the Monrell house. There the two men meet Stella Bergen, who works as secretary to Philip's mother, and each of them wants her. Stella likes the steadier, harder-working Ward, but she marries Philip, and Ward leaves for Scotland to take a job. The family steel mill is handed to Philip, who is unsuited to running it, and signs of mental illness appear in him. He becomes jealous of Ward and of his wife. He invites Ward to the house and makes him the mill's chief engineer.
