John Sutton
Biography
John Sutton was a British actor born in Rawalpindi, India, in 1908 and educated at Wellington College. He worked for about a decade in British colonies as a hunter, rancher, and tea planter, then arrived in Hollywood in the mid-1930s as a technical consultant. Directors soon noticed his dark looks and put him before the camera, starting with an unbilled role in The Last of the Mohicans (1936) and small parts including the Bulldog Drummond series. He became a familiar screen rival and villain, often as a polished swashbuckler who met his end at the hero's sword. At 20th Century-Fox in the 1940s he appeared in Jane Eyre (1943), Captain from Castile (1947), The Three Musketeers (1948), and The Fan (1949), and occasionally took leads in films like Moon Over Her Shoulder (1941) and Tonight We Raid Calais (1943). His film career waned in the 1950s and he moved into television. He died in 1963.
